It’s really cool, largely for that one reason.
The rocket would be a big hit at any TRA launch I ever attended, though the method of ignition would never ever be allowed. Oh dear god never. Not even at the BALLS launch.
Torches. Some sort of appallingly large fire source. And then that … thing comes spinning out of the smoke. So very cool.

Oh, that’s marvelous! What fun, even if there doesn’t seem to be any practical purpose for it (my failing, of course). I’ve posted the link to your blod entry here to TMM. Got to share the joy. 🙂
that is a pyro thing called a tourbillion. I believe that piece was done in Thailand where the CSPC doesn’t exist. its essentially a steel pipe filled with black powder and plugged at the ends. there are several holes drilled into the pipe, some at an angle so as to provide rotation. it is ignited from those holes. the thing is mounted on a spindle, and when it is ignited it rotates on that spindle to get spun up, whereupon it lifts off. *usually* they are only an inch or two long, and some of the readers may know of a variant of these called helicopters.
The Thai people do things in a pretty big way when it comes to pyro, there are some equally spectacular videos floating around of some that didn’t turn out quite so well.
the parachute is a nice touch.
Ohmigosh that’s cool!
Way too cool… All I know is that if this were manned, the astroNUT would need a lot of gravall. :^)
I need me one of those. The neighbors look at me a little oddly with my 4th of July oxy/acetylene balloons and my black powder canon. This would probably put them over the edge.
I wants it! Just think of how much higher it could go if the spindles were shaped like helicopter rotors, and more energy was put into rotation! I bet that sucker would keep climbing for several seconds after burnout…
