There are a few things I miss from ze old days as Mr. Suburban Man. Not many. But high on the list is monte cristo sandwiches. It’s a ham and cheese sandwich fried in egg batter and served with raspberry jam.
Over the weekend somebody sent me a care package containing luxury goodies, including some ham spread and a jar of raspberry jam. I got to looking at them yesterday while thinking about supper. It happened that, unusually, I have a small block of actual cheese as opposed to the usual pre-sliced pasteurized cheese-like food product* I keep for doggie treats, and which I’ll rarely touch.
Of course I have fresh-baked bread, and plenty of eggs.
Hmmm.

I’m pretty sure I just broke some Wisconsin law reading that phrase. I do know I cringed upon contemplating it. Why do you hate the dogs? 🙂
I’ve never heard of a Monte Cristo sandwich until just now, but I always did like jelly on an egg sandwich, so I have a feeling that a Monte Cristo would rock! Your version looks awfully good!
Wow. Nice job. Bet it would work with Spam too.
So… french toast with ham? I don’t know…
I do know that if you want good french toast or pancakes, get rid of the syrup and use home-canned jam (we like strawberry-rhubarb) or applesauce. Yum!
As to American cheese, I discovered why it is so popular (among retailers if not eaters). It doesn’t need refrigeration, and so may be shipped without difficulty. Of course, any package you receive including it, just throw out the “cheese” like you would junk mail.
And all these years I’ve been doing it wrong. I thought the Monte Cristo was a drink for a cold night…

The Monte Crist sandwich is a favorite in my house. Since they are a bit of work, it is a special occasion sandwich. Nice with sliced appl incorpated into it.
Love Monte Cristo sandwich also. I like the ones that have Swiss cheese, turkey and ham, alternated on three slices of bread, dipped into a thin batter (not just eggs) and quickly deep fried. Served with jam and sprinkled with powdered sugar. Hmmm, yum. Of course, if you consume one of those babys you’ll just want to curl up and sleep for 72 hours, 😉 Last one I had was about 5 years ago in Ely, Nevada. Road Trip! 😉
How about a lesson on how to make bread the Joel way.
