Random gulchy moments, and an upcoming review…

Out on my walky this morning I saw something welcome…

Lots of very fresh mule deer tracks. Things have been very sparse around the Gulch lately; I’m not even flushing many rabbits and the coyotes are shitting juniper berries. But this morning there were lots of nice mulie tracks in the moist sand.

And something else, too, right among them…

…and at first I thought, wow, that’s way bigger than your average coyote. (I should have planted a boot print there for comparison but forgot) I got excited: Wolf? Maybe another feral dog pack?

And then it occurred to me that Landlady was up this weekend. It’s only her dog having fun.

Giving Torso boy his morning constitutional, we passed a little brush pile of juniper branches I cut away from the driveway several months ago…

And found that the rats have been hard at work on their winter nests.

They strip the bark from dead branches and chew them into fine strands like old-fashioned excelsior padding, then form it into very neat nests in their burrows. It’s probably very good insulation; it certainly makes good fire tinder.

And Landlady brought up a new and much-anticipated gadget…

A grinding mill for wheat berries! We have a couple of buckets of the stuff, and so do S&L, and till now we had no way of grinding it other than coffee mills. I’m very much looking forward to trying it out for my next bread bake, but that’s a few days away. Stay tuned for a short-term review.

What a find, those nests. You don’t want to poison your rats, so shoot them. Put water bucket/peanut butter traps near their nests. Get rid of them now while you can.

Yer gittin’ kinda bloodthirsty there, Zelda…
