First lady Michelle Obama announced changes to food labels Friday that will require companies to show added sugar and will change serving sizes to reflect how much Americans really eat.
The White House and the Food and Drug Administration said the changes, required two years from now, also will revise the fine print on food labels to add vitamin D and potassium, “nutrients Americans often do not get enough of,” the administration said.
Mrs. Obama said the revamped labels are part of her “Let’s Move!” initiative to get Americans to eat healthier.
I missed hearing about the constitutional amendment that lets wifely units make up their very own government departments, whose edicts have the force of law. Guess I should have paid more attention, though I’m at a loss as to what good it would have done.
Still, I remember when they were expensive but essentially harmless ornaments who spent their time obsessing over the White House china. Kinda miss that.

The real difference between then and now is that the busybodies didn’t have the reach then that the do now..There were too many people with some semblance of common sense that acted as a check and balance to the do-gooders who were hell bent upon interfering with the day to day lives of regular folk. These days it’s do-gooder who rule the roost. I wish there were an open season on do-gooders like there are with other pests.
Have to go, I think I hear the black helicopters outside…
I think I’d label things,
“This packaging and its contents contain absolutely nothing of nutritional value or even of good sense. Eat at your own risk. If you did not grow it and/or prepare it yourself, then who knows what’s really in anything? Labels lie, just like politicians.”
Or maybe just, “There’s some stuff inside, and the only way to be sure of what it is would be to test it on yourself and see how you feel after.”
Is anyone personally responsible for anything any more??? I mean, besides those of us who are still addicted to a sense of pride about being able to run our own lives and are pretty happy with making our own decisions about our bodies?
Black helicopters indeed, probably just there for our own good. Sheesh.
There’s no way anyone with a lick of sense could interfere with her . . . that’d just be RACIST, ya know.
The irony is that the people who don’t choose to eat healthful food are the least apt to read any label. Those of us who do strive for a healthy diet, and probably do read labels, must take them with a large grain of salt. They can’t be trusted anyway.
My mother said that anything labeled with more than a few ingredients is probably suspect, and if she couldn’t easily pronounce the ingredients she read, she was positive she didn’t want to eat them. And she was a college graduate in the 1930s, so she was no dummy.
I can’t begin to grow or produce all of the things I eat, so have a few “rules” to help me decide. First, I choose things as close to the original, natural form as possible. Fresh, whole chicken, not “nuggets,” for example. I buy frozen vegetables frequently, since their “fresh” forms are either not available, in very poor condition in the store, or simply too expensive. My choices are a little limited most of the year, and I welcome whatever my garden produces, but I don’t always have much option.
When I do buy packaged stuff, it is the most natural and simple stuff I can find. I LOVE graham crackers, and may eat a box of them every six months or so… and chocolate… Oh, dear. 🙂 I buy the large dark special chocolate bars, and make one stretch over a week. One of those things I’m REALLY going to miss come the revolution. sigh
And, yes indeed, the Obummer woman needs to totally butt out….
Im with u on most everything however i wish men and women could be equal! I do agree on the whole when did the first lady become pres! But im happy that shes taking initiative especially regarding impotant issues such as human health!
