I took a week or so off after the framing party to let my stump and joints heal – the older I get, the less completely I seem to have recovered from getting torn up in ’72 – but last weekend Landlady and Ian came up together and brought a nice salvaged solid-core door. It’s not pre-hung, which meant I had to chisel and mount hinges, which is something I haven’t done since I was in my 20’s. So hanging it was a scary thing I was prone to put off doing.
Which meant I should do it immediately. Got hinges for it in town Monday.
The two smart people on the framing party couldn’t agree how big the opening should be and I had no idea. So we just decided to make it “definitely too big” and move on.
But the hinge thing was the part that scared me, and it turned out to be easy. So now I can move on.
I think I’ve (from scratch) hung one door in my lifetime. Now that I think back, it came out rather well. On the other hand, the last pre-hung door I installed was a multi-day challenge to get right.
It’s all in knowing what you’re doing…which I don’t.
I’ve got to say that hanging a door is one of my least favorite things about house building. I have hung three (two from scratch and one pre-hung) and each time I have had to ask for help. What looks like such a simple matter on a YouTube video just seems to always go south.
