I see an article about a woman, five years older than me, who just swam 103 miles from Cuba to Florida. It took her 53 hours. It was her fifth try. She was surrounded by boats.
And I’m thinking, “Why would you ever want to do that? I mean, I understand wanting to leave Cuba but there are perfectly good boats all around you! Riding in one of them would be ever so much quicker and easier!”
And I’m perfectly aware that she would consider that a very silly question. And I would never try to stop her from climbing any mountain she wants, metaphorical or otherwise, but personally I consider “because it’s there” to be a pretty dumb reason.

It’s like jumping out of perfectly good airplanes; If you get it no explanation is necessary. If you don’t get it no explanation is possible. Some of us are just wired differently. My personal motto is, Moderation is for wimps. Anything worth doing is worth doing to excess. 🙂
No offense Joel, but some people might ask “Why would anyone choose to live out in the desert with no electric or city water, miles away from town.”
To each his (or her ) own poison.
No offense Joel…
🙂 None taken, oh ye of little irony!
Why does one continue to “practice” sex, long after the children are raised and gone ?
When the time comes to bring stories to the table – ‘dumb things’ often provide the best fodder.
A friend’s father used to say – “when it’s all said and done all you have is your scars and your stories.”
