Looky here what I got, in three completely separate care packages!

Larry Correia’s latest in hardback! “Yeah, who’s got something somebody wants to borrow now, huh?”
Another book that…couldn’t possibly be different from Larry Correia’s latest. It appears to be life advice from hippies, but I’ll give it a try.
And here’s a bit of serendipity. I mentioned a week or so ago that I needed to replace my old faithful Tracfone, and had decided to go with one that has the little tiny keypad because full 50% of the people I communicate with prefer to text. And I had barely hit Publish on that post when I got an email from somebody saying “Don’t buy that phone! I’ve got one I had to retire.” Not A Smudge On It. Saved me $40 right there.
Thank you very, very much, guys!
And thanks also to Ian, who helped me with a quick household project…

It’s an awning! It’s a balcony! It’s two things in one! When the wind comes from the north during a storm, rain just pours through that window and I cannot find the leak to save my life. I think it may actually be a flaw in the frame itself. So I wanted to give the hard rain something else to hit. Also, I’ve always had a little pre-hung door that’ll go in right over the regular door, and the wall of the loft is unpanelled and uninsulated right at that spot. The cabin needs a balcony like Little Bear needs a physics library but I do want a quick alternate way out of the loft in case of fire. So that’s also what that’s for, and it will definitely be done before firewood season.
ETA: I got an email this morning from someone concerned about the structural integrity of that awning/balcony. Those 2-bys aren’t just stuck on the front of the cabin. They’re actually eight feet long and part of the loft floor, and very solidly mounted to the frame. So it’s not going anywhere.

Looking good, Joel! And that’s a great Haul o’ Stuff.
I’m curious about how the OSB on the Lair’s exterior is holding up. That stuff tends to delaminate awfully easily and I’m amazed it’s held up as well as it appears to have, uncovered.
It’s not holding up well. I’ve either got to get proper siding on the south side pretty soon or plan on replacing the OSB.
The siding thing keeps getting put off because I need about $700 all told and that just never happens. Or comes close to happening. We were discussing it the other day: The only solution is to stop thinking of it as a monolithic project. Do the most vulnerable side, then start saving up for the next most vulnerable side and so on till done.
Does, the OSB have to match? Would it be,possible to barter excess items or labor to,people in the area that might have an odd sheet of OSB or two left over from other projects?
The angle of that pic makes those 2x’s angled like they were just held up by joist hangers.
If nothing else, how about a wrapping of 30# tar paper?
Yeah, I know. Clearly more is needed. The 2x’s are fine, but I’m thinking something impervious on top of the 1x’s is called for.
I mean wrapping the house and shielding that OSB in tar paper- it’s been done before……….
Hence the term tar-paper shack 🙂
