And hungry, which I’m currently approaching cautiously with a little dry toast. Tried the same thing sometime mid-day yesterday and only brought back the nausea.
But I must have dodged the flu, which was my big fear. Back when I was Mr. Suburban Man I used to catch every flu bug that came along and it always took a month to fully recover. Now it’s been ten years since I had it, and I’m not convinced I’d survive. But if I had the flu I’d be well into “somebody please just kill me” by now.
I did get out to do chicken chores yesterday but only just barely. Since I barely slept at all night before last, I made up for it by sleeping much of the morning well past noon, and then again from five to just now. Woke for a while at midnight with a little headache, took some aspirin and went back to sleep. Actually most of yesterday is just an unpleasant blur.
Neighbor L – who also brought me chicken soup and store-bought bread – told me that some other neighbors appear to have gotten the same stomach bug at the same time.

You and the neighbors are all exposed to the same wandering rat and mouse population as it poops, pees and chews its way around your neighborhood. It’s one of the things you all have in common.
You can get illnesses from chickens, dogs, cats etc. too.
Lots of hand washing and face washing help avoid all that. Especially when you’ve been around the rats.
Does anyone in the Gulch get a flu shot? Like, free, at your county health department?
Maybe a bulk purchase of electrolyte solution on the next trip to town is sensible. Dehydration can happen very quickly. And vitamin C. Just saying. No I’m not a doctor and don’t play one on TV.
If you need to sleep during daylight hours, at least it isn’t summer and at least you are no longer trying to sleep in a hot attic. And (should it be necessary) running to the potty will be so much safer and more convenient.
Good to hear that you are on the mend Joel. You probably caught a stomach bug. All it takes is to handle something up, forget to wash your hands and later have a sandwich or handle food while you’re making a meal. Don’t forget to drink plenty to flush out the pipes.
Not up to much besides weak tea so far, but otherwise taking your advice. I’m not really feeling bad at all this morning, just very tired. Be glad when my appetite comes back.
Nurse nag here… Do NOT ever take aspirin or ibuprofen on an empty stomach! Both of these are responsible for a lot of stomach and intestinal bleeding, affecting some people even if they eat something substantial before taking them. If you need aspirin in the middle of the night, at least have some crackers first. Taking aspirin on an empty stomach only recently heaving and vomiting is just asking for it.
Forget about the flu “shot.” If you will look into it, you’ll see that it is not effective, and it does damage your natural immune system. I’ve never had a “shot.” And I’ve never had the flu in my life. I have a healthy immune system instead.
Oh, and really… I’m delighted to know you are recovering so fast. You have a better immune system now than you did in the city. That’s evident. Good deal! 🙂
Bless neighbor L for checking on you and bringing soup. That’s so nice and reassuring that you’re not totally out there alone.
