At the risk of exposing the innate sexism of my white cis male privilege, I’d like to point out that Scarlett Johansson was easily the best thing about Iron Man II. Because nobody does a mediocre superhero movie like Robert Downey Jr.

Scary Manifesto that keeps getting pushed down on the sidebar by filthy capitalism!
They say that Louis XIV had the inscription Ultima Ratio Regum cast into all the cannon of the French Army. It means “The Ultimate Argument of Kings,” and that always struck me as one of the most honest and up-front things any ruler or would-be ruler ever said. “We can dress it up prettier than this, but when it comes down to the unvarnished truth this is what it’s about: You’ll do as I say or I’ll send my goons to kill you.”
I thought about that for a long time. If there’s an ultimate argument, it seems only logical that there must be an ultimate answer. For years I thought the ultimate answer must be the bullets in my rifle, but it never seemed quite right. I’ve got bullets – he’s got frigging Cannon Balls. I mean, if there were three hundred million rifles throwing bullets at him, then maybe. But we all know that’s not going to happen. So if there’s an ultimate answer to his ultimate argument, it sure as hell ain’t bullets.
It finally came to me – and that’s when I abandoned the city and most of my stuff, and gave all that was behind me a good stiff Randian Shrug.
The ultimate answer to kings is not a bullet, but a belly laugh.

“…Scarlett Johansson was easily the best thing about Iron Man II”
I was never attracted to Scarlett Johansson. Any reasonably healthy woman between the ages of 16 and 45 is just as attractive as Johansson and there is a 95% chance I will like her voice better. YMMV.
Maybe that quantifies the heights of mediocrity that Marvel attains. Betty Butterface is Better.
Can’t say I think she’s all that attractive, I just like how she plays the character.
Just out of curiosity, what does it take for you guys to consider a woman ATTRACTIVE as opposed to run-of-the-mill, see-’em-every-day meh-looking?? What does it take to make you go “MMMMMM BABY” and lose control of yourselves even if only momentarily? I think SJ is quite spiffy-looking, myself . . . while retaining self control.
They have the same tastes as slick. Chunky. And subservient. Neither adjective applies to Ms. Johansson.
Of course, that also tells you very clearly that the Clinton marriage was NEVER consummated. Yeah, she meets the “chunky” requirement. But can you imagine her as “subservient”, no matter how much “medication” might be involved???
“What does it take to make you go “MMMMMM BABY” and lose control of yourselves even if only momentarily?”
My wife does that to me, but the kids have to be out of the house for an extended time or I need to have changed the locks recently.
I never say “meh” to any reasonably healthy girl. They are all pretty.
I’ve only seen a few clips but not the whole movie… yet, so I’ll hold off on making an opinion until I’ve sat down and watched the movie. As for Slate, I regard their opinion in the same way as I do with other critics, not at all. When thinking about critics, the old saying “Those who can, do… Those who can’t, criticize” comes to mind.
