Sort of the definition of a bad day…

The local market in the crappy little town nearest where I live just had work done on its roof…

Seriously, just recently. Overnight we had snow and sleet followed by a quick thaw, which is enough to prove whether the contractor you hired was worth a damn…

That’s just like any other roof work or really pretty much any construction type jobs you get now. They charge you thru the ass for american standards work. You know the usual bullshit about how american’s work is better than anyone else. But the usual group of illegal day workers shows up to do it under 3rd world standards. And thats fine for everyone including .gov inspectors, but try and do it yourself and .gov is all over you ass about how that nail is .0005 too low or this is wrong, so you change it and a different inspector comes in and says the exact reverse and tells you to change it back.

My first thought is not printable. Cut corners and bad things happen

Is there any chance the roofing contractor also owns the Ace Hardware store?

It’s easy to blame shoddy work on contractors but, this is the place where Joel has in the past posted about meat coolers and freezers continually failing on hot days because the business owner was too cheap to get them fixed properly. Being a business in a very small town, I suspect the owner’s margins are very small, so the owner is probably going as cheep as he can. The problem is that quality work isn’t cheap, and cheap work isn’t quality. As Heinlein was fond of saying, there ain’t no such thing as a free lunch.

The problem is where do you find quality work now that’s affordable? All the places I know from years past now ALL hire the illegals so you get the same crap work. Just because you pay more now means nothing really.
