The weather turned nasty. It’s a little after noon and the road mud is still frozen, the wind is whistling down the stovepipe – making it difficult for smoke to go up the stovepipe – and it’s supposed to rain or snow this afternoon. I’m expecting freezing rain, just because that’s the most unpleasant of all possibilities. It’s that kind of day. Supposed to just be today, but who knows?
Anyway I haven’t seen a hint of sun all day so I’m switching off now. Later.

I sure hope it doesn’t delay the arrival of all the goodies scheduled for this weekend! Stay safe an warm, however it goes.
I’m curious what draws the most power for your internet use–Is it the laptop or the network part? I’ve been surprised at how well a cheap tablet with a bluetooth keyboard fills the place of a laptop for light duty stuff.
The only thing in the whole place that pulls more power than my laptop – other than power tools of course – is my coffee grinder but it only runs for a few seconds at a time. The system is really built around the power needs of the laptop because it’s on for hours at a time, and often at night. Lighting used to be a budgeted factor, but thanks to the advent of affordable LEDs there’s barely a CFL left in the cabin and it’s only under fairly extreme conditions that I need to concern myself over how much lighting I use.
The modem’s power draw isn’t much more than the parasitic draw of the inverter. It’s worth turning it off when not in use, but only overnight or when the sky is very overcast. The laptop and modem are on the same power strip and usually I turn them on and off together.
Someday a cheap or used tablet that can be recharged during the day will come with reach of my greedy scrounging fingers. But honestly I’ve never even held one and don’t know what they can do. If I can ever move ebooks or maybe even MP4 files to a tablet with a functioning battery, my entertainment habits will probably change quite a lot.
