Synchronicity – It can be a little scary.

I’ve mentioned it before, the sometimes almost eerie way things I need will drop into my lap just at the right time. If I were the sort to see supernatural things behind every bush, that would be my explanation. But I’m not.

In this case, it wasn’t quite that prompt. But it was perfectly appropriate, in its own odd way.

In early spring I said goodbye to my very favorite shirt. You’ve probably got a shirt just like it: It’s just the right texture, just the right color, just the right fit, and as it ages you get almost reluctant to wear it because every time is one less time. Mine was a high-dollar tan chamois I got from my last job before I became an unemployable temp, and maybe that was part of its charm to me. It was my comfortable, favorite shirt and I wore it until it passed threadbare into ragged. But nothing lasts forever, and as I was sorting out my winter clothes I decided this one’s time had passed and I cut off the buttons and gave it a Viking funeral.

In this climate it was pretty much exclusively a winter shirt, which is why it lasted so long, and I probably wouldn’t have gotten around to mourning it till I dug out my winter clothes next November. But instead I’ve got a new one to look forward to.

Ain’t it purty? Chamois cloth, which I love. Fits just right, roomy but not all floppy, y’know? Not new, but hardly worn at all: Just faded a bit from washing. Just right. I was over at a neighbor’s this morning on an unrelated matter when out of the blue he asked me if I wanted it. “It’s a little small on me,” he said, and given the difference in our sizes it probably was.

Rather than hang it in the shed with my other winter gear, I think I’ll leave it out for my next trip to town. 🙂 And that’ll get Uncle Murphy to finally trigger some summer weather.

One Response to Synchronicity – It can be a little scary.

  1. Ray (that guy in Kentucky) says:

The shirt gods are all powerful. My favorite chamois died last year, and on my next Goodwill trip I found the IDENTICAL one. Still had the hang tags from retail. Long may your shirt live.
