The four most beautiful words in a poor man’s vocabulary…

“The Money Is Handled.”

I’ve been promising the Jeep new tires for several years now. The ones he’s got are at least twelve years old that I know of. At least two years ago Claire sent me $300 to kick-start a Jeep Tire Fund but that contribution coincided eerily with some rat’s decision to eat major, important parts of the wiring harness, the repairs to which cost almost exactly $300. The tires were paper-thin then. I have nursed a slow leak for several months that I simply can’t fix, since it’s leaking around an old screw-hole plug. Y’know, if I were bashing around the boonies in an old Toyota 4X4 there almost wouldn’t be a problem but Jeep tires ain’t cheap.

Well, thanks to a couple of Generous Readers who shall remain nameless unless they want to chime in, the fix is in. I’m still waiting for money to move between accounts but I’ve made arrangements with the local shop, the tires are available, and this time tires will happen.

Thank you, thank you.

    “the tires are available”
That’s good news! I had gotten the impression from your earlier saga of the Jeep tires that the ones you needed hadn’t been available since somewhere around WWI. This report is almost as much fun as care package reports. Thanks readers for always keeping it interesting.

Just out of curiousity, what size tires does the Jeep use?

Me too! I got that impression from the two local vendors who told me the tires I needed haven’t been available since somewhere around WWI. Now all of a sudden they’re common as can be. It is a puzzlement. Also, it saves me buying narrower tires but offsetting the savings with the requirement for all new rims.

    Norman, they’re 31X10.50R15.

I am thinking your tire guys must have misunderstood what year your jeep is or something. That size tire is made by every manufacturer that makes truck tires.

I’m considering the possibility that both local guys I talked to that day just simultaneously didn’t feel like looking it up. This is that kind of place sometimes.

Weren’t the original WWII Jeep tires a narrow 16″ type, like the old 6.00-16 stuff so popular in the ’40s . . . but made with that unique “Jeep pattern” tread? Those might be somewhat hard to find, but I’m certainly not up on it.

And yes, the 31X10.50R15 types are currently popular.
