The new powershed switch finally arrived…

I’ll buy locally if I possibly can, and even though the local hardware didn’t stock a timer switch and it wouldn’t save any money I figured it’d still be quicker to order it through them than online from Amazon.

3 weeks later…

(sigh) And I’m not thrilled with it because I can turn it on but have to wait for it to time out, I can’t just crank it back to zero like with every other timer switch I ever saw. Which doesn’t quite defeat the whole purpose but puts a fair dent in it. And I didn’t realize I needed a plastic cover because the metal cover I had on there is specifically named as a no-no in the instructions.

But whatever. At least I won’t wake up in the morning and wonder why the voltage is 2/10v too low.

And wonder of wonders I remembered a new trailer hitch ball.

I didn’t figure on the auto parts store being closed by decree – so it’s a minor miracle the hardware store had one that’ll work. It’s the sort of trap Murphy likes to set for me and I was very surprised he gave me a pass this time. It’ll probably turn out to have a mis-marked size or something.

  1. Pork says:

Joel, Spam factory just closed down, FWIW.

  2. Joel says:

No worries. This is why we HOARD.

  3. Kentucky says:

    Funny, I just read this . . .

“Hormel made their first batch of Spam in 1937. The company just announced that due to hoarding by consumers, they are now going to make a second batch!”

    😉

  4. jabrwok says:

Wise of them. If the hoard runs out and replacements aren’t available they might face an unhappy horde!

  5. Judy says:

God, I love English! Where else can you get a bunch of words that sound the same but mean totally different things when spelled/written out.

The only way to stay ahead of Murphy is to expect it to go south, so everything that goes right is a pleasant surprise.

  6. Robert says:

SPAM production halted? YAY! I’d rather hunt rats for meat.
    BTW, “Hormel” rhymes with “normal”.

“This is why we HOARD.” Attention SJWs: when Joel said “hoard”, he meant “temporarily increase inventory levels in prudent anticipation of supply chain disruption”.

“I can’t just crank it back to zero” You have a switch you can turn ON but not OFF??? Um.

My electrician landlord tells me almost all timers were made by Intermatic until a couple of years ago when they were bought out and quality plummeted. He recently replaced a 25-year-old Intermatic timer; the new Intermatic hung up twice the first month. Bathroom was rather warm after 8 hours of electric heat…

Interesting. Auto parts stores in TN have always been open.

  8. TK421a says:

Interesting that the auto parts store wouldn’t be considered an essential service like it is here. Anyway, I’m glad to see you managed to get a replacement ball for the hitch. Don’t forget to put a little grease on the threads so when it comes time to take it off it will be easier.

Three weeks to get a power switch from Amazon. And, here I was bitching because my orders are taking three or four days.

I hadn’t heard the news about Spam, well at least you have a crate of cans in the pantry Joel. Personally, if the news had been about corned beef, I’d be concerned. 🙂

  9. Mark says:

    a. Install a big fuggin knife switch inline w/ timer to compensate for design buffoonery

    2. Hoard or Whored?

  10. Zelda says:

Grease on the threads or Teflon tape?

  11. Auto parts stores closed? Are mechanics closed as well? What kind of effery is this?

  12. TK421a says:

Zelda, teflon tape is for plumbing.

  13. matismf says:

Anti-seize is what you really need. Any decent hardware store should stock same.

  14. Zelda says:

TK421a, originally yes I suppose so but I’ve used it for years on anything that has threads that might be wet at some time in the future or aren’t the best quality especially if the threads may be threaded for a long time. It’s wonderful stuff. Keeps threads like new.
