The Secret Lair is officially a 2-room cabin.

Obviously a lot of trim work* before the doorway is complete, but there is an official doorway where the window used to be.

I have violated Little Bear’s safe space in a major and tragic way, and he’ll need some time to adjust to the new normal. LB loves his bed, and he does not understand why I just took his wall away.

*Those familiar with the Secret Lair’s interior are chortling in a sardonic manner. “Trim work. Right,” they are saying. “We’ll all live long enough to see that.”

And your loft ladder is still in place . . . right?

    Just like I planned it.

    🙂

Man, that job is going amazingly fast! Now you should drag your inflatable mattress in there to spend at least one ceremonial night.

It’s taken something like six weeks to build one room, so I’d go no more than “slow but steady.” 🙂

The old one-legged guy only has so much energy and walking range before damage sets in, but if I set one or two doable goals in a day, plus the usual maintenance chores, I can keep progress moving.

What Ben said. To those of us watching, your accomplishments are amazing and inspiring and it seems like it has gone quickly with minimum hassles due to your skills and planning. Boy is that good to see. Hope your doorway is really wide. You never know when you will need a wide door.

  5. Congratulations!

I’m hoping one aspect of this is that you’ll be able to store your food supplies and out-of-season clothes indoors now – either in the new room or the loft. I don’t recall your layout well enough to be sure what’s under the loft but it wouldn’t be too hard to make a serviceable dumbwaiter to move stuff up and down.

It’s looking good Joel. As for the trim, after we moved in to our home it was a couple of years before trim got taken care of. One thing I would take care of sooner than later is that piece of wood sticking up at the bottom of the doorway. Last thing you want is a 2AM face plant when you are answering the call of nature.

The forest house that we built got all the finishing touches in the main level living area, but after 20 years there, the second story never did get a lot of the finishing touches like actually nailing the baseboards and trims in place. Hope it works out better for you. 😉

Just curious, but why does LB need to be tethered indoors also? Is he that much the escape artist? I’ve had prey driven dogs( GSPs mostly) for many yeasts now so I can sympathize needing to keep them from doing bad things but they are fine inside.

  9. Joel says:

No, no, he isn’t usually tethered inside. It just happens that the last time I had him out briefly on his long lead I hung the wrist loop on the wall but didn’t bother to unshackle him.
