The tenth amendment to the what??!?

This isn’t real far from where I live. The topic of the controversy is one answer to the question, “Mommy, why does Uncle Joel carry that big gun everywhere he goes?”

The Apache County Board passed the ordinance this week after listening to hours of testimony from ranchers who complained the wolves are killing their livestock. The county said it has the authority to ban reintroduction of the Mexican Gray Wolf under the 10th amendment of the constitution that addresses the rights of states and local government.

The tenth amendment? That old thing?

Naturally the ecos rushed the barricades (the ecos rushed the barricades in a natural way?)

“This is another livestock industry attempt to attack the very vulnerable Mexican Wolves that are out there and to challenge the broad authority and responsibility of our federal government to conserve and eventually recover this endangered animal,” Robinson said.

Yeah, they’re out there because you &^%$ put them there, you ^%%$#@! And now the people who’re forced to live with them have no rights at all. In theory, when a wolf kills a head of livestock the owner can get reimbursed by the feds. In practice, that happens only if the feds send somebody to the scene of the crime to investigate, which rarely happens promptly, and meanwhile nature is busily and greedily cleaning up the mess.

I’ve met a few ranchers from the border area. None of them are fond of wolves, or of people who are fond of wolves. In fact the only people who are fond of wolves don’t seem to live out here. But the penalty for killing one, even if it’s chewing on your entrails at the time, is devastating.

The feds, not surprisingly, seem to be ignoring the whole thing. A poor desert county full of indians and dirt-broke ranchers is trying to tell the feds what they can’t do? Pull the other one.

About Joel

You shouldn't ask these questions of a paranoid recluse, you know.

  1. Matt, another says:

I beleive if they truly had the Mexican Wolves best interest at heart, they would of left them alone, in the wild in Mexico and let them reproduce and cross the border on their own when they felt like it. But no, they had to kidnap wolves from their homes, hold them in captivity, force them to reproduce and then just when the wolves get used to their bondage, throw them out into the hostile world. Can’t get much meaner than that.

The ecos never have addressed the issue of wolves crossing with dogs and coyotes either with the potential of creating hybrids that are harder to deal with than the original wolves.

Oh Greg… you forgot to mention that one must look for and deal with the idiot “radio collars” on some of them. Just read a story about a man who had to shoot a bear… and forgot that little detail. He’s in jail now. I suggest tossing the collar into a moving freight car or open truck bed. Just smashing it will pinpoint your location…

  4. True, true. Of course, those collars are hard to miss seeing, they’re not exactly small. Agreed that you don’t want to kill the thing, last transmission is a data point for the trackers. Yet another argument for good optical glass, get that assessment done first and then make your plan.
