Wimpy joins an AK build party, survives.

I Built this AK-47. It’s Legal and Totally Untraceable.

Among those ready to get going at this “build party” (none of whom wanted their names used) are a father-son duo getting in some bonding time and a well-bellied sixtysomething with a white Fu Manchu who “loves” the click-ack! sound of a round being chambered. Assembling a Romanian variant is a builder wearing a camo jacket and a hat embroidered with an AR-15 rifle above the legend “Come and take it.” His knuckle tattoos read “PRAY HARD.”

Having tremulously infiltrated this gang of dangerous insurrectionists, some of whom may even be associated with Tea Party terror groups, the writer is shocked! Shocked! to learn that such atavistic horrors as “untraceable guns” are not only in existence in the enlightened environs of Southern California, not only (gasp!) legal, but also present no social problem at all…

Seeing how easy this is, are build parties monitored? Do hand-built weapons ever surface in crimes? Are the cops worried? When I call local law enforcement representatives from Los Angeles, Orange County, Santa Ana, and Garden Grove, they say they’ve never heard of such a thing.

So what was the point, exactly? Does the writer simply wish to ruin somebody else’s legal, harmless fun, to advance his own ‘right to feel safe?’

Yes.

I’m reminded of what one of the build party hosts said before I left: “Remember that thing I told you about why people do this: These builds can happen only because they aren’t blown out to the public and law enforcement.”

Wink wink, nudge nudge, alert the feds media that such awful goings-on are going on, and somebody will stick a stopper in the loophole. Right?

Wrong. Oh, I suppose it would be simple enough to change a rule and drive build parties more underground than they already are. Stroke of the pen, law of the land. Pretty cool, but you can’t stop them. You can only make them sneakier.

I don’t know how common build parties are, but I know they’re common. Parts kits have become so popular that their once-negligible prices have skyrocketed. Since a parts kit is useless without fabrication and assembly, I assume build parties happen a hell of a lot. Yet the Socal cops were completely unaware of the practice? Indicates a certain lack of adverse social effect, wouldn’t you say?

So what’s the problem?

    idiot. Loudmouth idiot.
The import of AK variant parts is the whim of ATF. The ‘flats’ are no problemo….just sheet steel. The barrels, bolts, etc. ARE a problem. The import of parts for ‘prohibited’ firearms (like Machine guns) already hit a big speed bump….

But hey, go ahead….scream your defiance from the rooftops.

Okay. Thank you for your comment.

that comment wasn’t aimed at YOU Joel……I just hate to see yet another nice thing shut down because some idiot brays his glorious discovery to the four winds.

  4. Deliberately anonymous. says:

of course, thats the point. The clown is anti gun, and he is deliberately braying his glorious discovery because he WANTS it shut down.

HEY….maybe somebody can show him what a milling machine and a lathe can do.

The fact that the author of the “expedient” series of books was given a five year prison sentence in Britain, then later arrested and detained without trial, suggests that he was achieving some interesting results.

Reputedly, he used neither a lathe nor a milling machine.

Despite that interesting little detail about his lack of equipment (and again reputably) the legislation writers of that place investigated the possibility of banning or licensing home shops.

One unworkable piece of legislation leads to ever more absurd legeslation to try to counter the ever increasing cascade of unintended consequences (and to attempt to stamp on those inconvenient individuals who point to the unintended consequences).

I’ve always LOVED that song. 🙂

Just an interesting side note, Luty’s original SMG that he went to prison over is currently housed in the Pattern Room collection.

As for AK build parties, they don’t happen all that much anymore, at least not compared to 5 years ago when the kits were under $100 with intact original barrels. It’s hardly economical to build one form a kit anymore, with prices at $300+. Well, at least until this recent extended panic.

I wonder…… vague possibility I know where that build party happened. There really aren’t that many locations near LA that do them. The description sounds similar as does one of the helper type people described. The hammering in of a barrel however didn’t sound lie something done at that shop. If it’s the same place it may interest Mr. Shatz to know the guy who does the builds is “Johnny Law” hisownsef. Oh, and other local law enforcement know all about those parties. I was at Bright Spot Pawn in Avondale and a uniformed CHiP was buying a registered flat(moron) for what he said was his third build. Seems there’s a slew of CHiPpies building AKs and ARs. Not that I would know anything about that kind of a party. I have friends who say they know people. I’m not even in USA anymore.
As for the bump fire stocks he keeps harping on; yeah…illegal as hell in Cali, but he fails to mention that.
Oh yeah, and I’ll just bet Senior Shatz took a die grinder to that AK. Sure. The dog ate my AR.
