“You’re a Criminal in a Mass Surveillance World”

Holy crap, this is long. And depressing. And I don’t claim to be more than halfway through it myself, and haven’t yet detected content justifying the south end of the title’s hyphen, “How to Not Get Caught.” But so far it has defeated my every TL;DR instinct, which means it’s good reading.

I just read this and my brain is about to explode.

At the second paragraph I was reminded of this http://www.joehuffman.org/Freedom/JewsInTheAttic.htm I’ll have to read the rest of that when I get home tonight.

    TL;DR?

The article is a bit too defeatist in flavor in the beginning, while later (cognitive dissonance?) the author presents lots of useful recommendations to defeat the government.

Yeah, there are 2 million political prisoners in America. But there are 315 million Americans (or so) not in jail – all of whom the NSA panopticon could convict if needed. No, the world has not come to an end with government surveillance. The mindset should not be, “I can’t hide anything from NSA, oh woe is me, call the waaaahmbulance,” but “Let’s see, how can I throw another monkey wrench in the plans of the snoops?” How can we make their job more difficult?

My dream is to have them spend a day of computer time on their supercomputers, cracking an email that contains a recipe for oatmeal cookies.

It’s like home security. You cannot make a home perfectly immune from burglary, but you can persuade the burglar to move on down the road to another victim. Just keep incrementally adding security measures to your computer system.

The author also completely ignores the utility of things like battle rifles in deterring (or getting revenge for) bad government behavior.

I may have to write an article about this article.
