Laddie got me up at 4:30 with an urgent demand, then we both just climbed back into the sack until seven. It’s not that cold, 15o at present, but it certainly feels cold compared to the past mild week or so. I haven’t even been lighting the woodstove. But it’s roaring at the moment, for sure.

Scary Manifesto that keeps getting pushed down on the sidebar by filthy capitalism!
They say that Louis XIV had the inscription Ultima Ratio Regum cast into all the cannon of the French Army. It means “The Ultimate Argument of Kings,” and that always struck me as one of the most honest and up-front things any ruler or would-be ruler ever said. “We can dress it up prettier than this, but when it comes down to the unvarnished truth this is what it’s about: You’ll do as I say or I’ll send my goons to kill you.”
I thought about that for a long time. If there’s an ultimate argument, it seems only logical that there must be an ultimate answer. For years I thought the ultimate answer must be the bullets in my rifle, but it never seemed quite right. I’ve got bullets – he’s got frigging Cannon Balls. I mean, if there were three hundred million rifles throwing bullets at him, then maybe. But we all know that’s not going to happen. So if there’s an ultimate answer to his ultimate argument, it sure as hell ain’t bullets.
It finally came to me – and that’s when I abandoned the city and most of my stuff, and gave all that was behind me a good stiff Randian Shrug.
The ultimate answer to kings is not a bullet, but a belly laugh.

You have a talent for taking photographs Joel, and this is one of your better ones. Looking at the secret lair in the dim light of predawn with snow on the ground, the photo has a very dystopian vibe to it. Great photo Joel.
Mike beat me to it. This could be a postcard.
Thanks. I saw that while walking with Torso Boy and went back out to get it before the sun could clear the ridge.
Wouldn’t go so far as “dystopian,” though… 🙂
Damn, that just looks cold!
Postcards. Another money making opportunity to add to your calendars, wilderness tours and campground, and chocolate chip/oatmeal/whatever cookies.
I agree with you Joel, I know the secret lair is in no way dystopian. However, when the spooky predawn lighting and the thinly veiled dusting of snow are put together, the photo gives off that vibe. It’s all in the lighting.
It’s the same as with the photo in the link I’ve attached. Thanks to the lighting and the fog there is a “look out for Jack the Ripper” vibe which is creepy as hell. Yet the photo was taken at York University looking North towards a refinery, and in the light of day the place isn’t spooky at all.

Needs some Wookies to make it look right. Or some storm troopers…

You guys are so negative. I always thought of the Lair more as Shangi-La.
I think it looks like the desert version of a cozy little hobbit house, with a Jeep as a dash of color. But the one at York looks very creepy. And of course rookies are always welcome. Joel, after days of not needing to light a fire, we’re back into single digit, and single negative digits, up here. Nice to now you are cozy and can live in comfort. I think the Lair looks lovely. Functional. Engineered, not organic, but cozy. Good job.
I had to look up the word ‘dystopian’. It works with the picture at the bottom of this page.
