That is sixteen stainless steel 5/16″ bolts, a parting gift yesterday from Weekender Neighbor S. I’ve been renewing Landlady’s battery connections, and complained to him that her batteries are the only ones in the Gulch that routinely turn connector bolts into puddles of foamy brown goo. I don’t know why this happens, and neither does he but I can try these stainless bolts to see if they’ll resist the destructive corrosion. It means doing some work twice, since I’m already done with the top tier, but replacing the bolts is the easy part. Cleaning up the goo and sanding the connections clean is the hard part.

Scary Manifesto that keeps getting pushed down on the sidebar by filthy capitalism!
They say that Louis XIV had the inscription Ultima Ratio Regum cast into all the cannon of the French Army. It means “The Ultimate Argument of Kings,” and that always struck me as one of the most honest and up-front things any ruler or would-be ruler ever said. “We can dress it up prettier than this, but when it comes down to the unvarnished truth this is what it’s about: You’ll do as I say or I’ll send my goons to kill you.”
I thought about that for a long time. If there’s an ultimate argument, it seems only logical that there must be an ultimate answer. For years I thought the ultimate answer must be the bullets in my rifle, but it never seemed quite right. I’ve got bullets – he’s got frigging Cannon Balls. I mean, if there were three hundred million rifles throwing bullets at him, then maybe. But we all know that’s not going to happen. So if there’s an ultimate answer to his ultimate argument, it sure as hell ain’t bullets.
It finally came to me – and that’s when I abandoned the city and most of my stuff, and gave all that was behind me a good stiff Randian Shrug.
The ultimate answer to kings is not a bullet, but a belly laugh.

Have you tried any of the battery corrosion preventative sprays or brush on stuff?

+1 on considering protective stuff.
I’ve tried petroleum jelly and also a special anti-corrosion grease. They work on all batteries except Landlady’s.
Axle grease. The real sticky stuff. Large globs of it will prevent oxidation. When you put it on, make sure to squeeze it into all crevices to drive out air and moisture.
Without knowing the materials of the frame and bolts I would take a shot (in the dark) and say this may be the issue.

This is a different problem than the one at the panel rack, MJR. This corrosion is happening at the battery terminals.
Hey Joel, I said it was a shot in the dark… :^)
