MILLER: Movie mogul says new Streep film to make NRA ‘wish they weren’t alive’
Mr. Weinstein then revealed his secret project about the gun rights group. “I shouldn’t say this, but I’ll tell it to you, Howard,” he said. “I’m going to make a movie with Meryl Streep, and we’re going to take this head-on. And they’re going to wish they weren’t alive after I’m done with them.”
The shock jock asked whether the film was going to be a documentary. Mr. Weinstein said no, that it would be a “big movie like a ‘Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.’”
The movie mogul said his vision was to scare people away from firearms. He foresees moviegoers to leave thinking, “Gun stocks — I don’t want to be involved in that stuff. It’s going to be like crash and burn.”
The hubris in that boast is so breathtaking it’s almost admirable. Harvey Weinstein has had enough of us crazy mouth-breathing gun owners, and if Washington won’t get rid of us he will. All he needs is the right script and Meryl Streep.
If it ever gets made, I hope to see it myself. I’ll bet it’s as entertaining – and as persuasive – as the original Reefer Madness.
Good luck with that, Harvey.
H/T to Thirdpower.

Hey, let’s volunteer to be unpaid actors in a remake of Reefer Madness. Of course, we’ll have to do some studio-sponsored, um, “research” on the subject. I hear weed is helpful for lowering intraocular pressure…
Too late.
Makes me think of the anti-communist John Wayne flick ‘Big Jim McClain’. In my experience, propaganda movies are usually pretty shitty.
His mistake is he thinks that the NRA creates gun owners. That the NRA is behind the desire for people to own and carry weapons. It is more accurate to see this the other way around. Gun owners make the NRA. The gun owners aren’t going to swear off guns or resign from the NRA because of anything he could put in a movie. But what will most probably happen is he will base his movie on lies and misrepresentations which the informed can easily see through. It will become talking points and opportunities to point out the lies and mistakes the movie made. He would be wiser to make the movie with a strict adherence to fact but he is after all a left wing zealot and thus he will choose to present lies and half truths. This may well backfire on him in a way he never could have expected. The classic problem with living in a echo chamber with like minded people is that they cannot imagine that well over 150 million Americans actually like guns and like the 2nd amendment.
I’m shaking in my boots. Shaking, I tell you.
Am I the only one that loves it when these prancing nancies try to talk tough?
Gone with the wind is correct. The NRA exist because gun owners wish it to not because the NRA magically creates gun owners. Weinstein has a cheek talking about violence with the number of violent, sorry ultra violent films he has produced.
Any bets on how many of the hollyweird dipsticks have armed body guards and security. Protection for me but not for thee, they’d be right at home in medieval England with their attitude. Lords and knights may carry swords but screw the rest of you!
Hope the eye improves soon. And yes paying someone to fix the car is a good idea, get a bit of corrosion and brake dust in that eye and it’s back to square one on it healing!
“The hubris in that boast is so breathtaking it’s almost admirable.”
I love it when you go for understatement, Joel. 🙂 The Reefer Madness comparison is all-day-long giggle-worthy, too–and thanks for that.
Well, at least the jerk is being openly honest about his intentions. It sure as hell beats all the ridiculous pretending that everyone else does.
It will become talking points and opportunities to point out the lies and mistakes the movie made.
A fairly safe prediction. Assuming the movie ever gets made and I get my hands on a copy, I for one intend to have a ball with the review. 😉
