Gov. Scott signs Florida emergency concealed carry bill

Yeah, this is more than a year old but I only just now saw it, no doubt dredged up because of the hurricane.

Florida had (one of?) the first of the new wave of shall-issue conceal carry laws back in the mid-eighties. Elsewhere that has increasingly evolved into no-permit carry, but not so much in Florida. Now here’s a law that puts the permit aside for a period of time during a mandatory evacuation: If you can own one legally you can carry it legally during the evac.

An odd sort of half-measure, but Florida is one of those places where the weather often comes disguised as a natural disaster. I myself have a family member who has probably bugged out by now…

So, previously, in the midst of chaos, you couldn’t carry even with the state’s prior permission to carry? Um…

Previously, if you already had a permit you were good to go.

This emergency carry law was passed to protect innocents who were packing in the midst of a disaster, since THERE IS NO PROVISION FOR LAWFUL OPEN CARRY IN FLORIDA.

ANY carry was either concealed (w/permit) or flat out criminal.

This new law essentially suspends the concealed permit requirement during emergencies. You STILL cannot open carry.

I have family on the space coast, and although they’ve battened down their hatches but good, I’m starting to worry a bit…

Up until a few years ago, we had this crap in North Carolina.

It took a while but at least somebody was thinking.
