I’m pretty sure this is still banned in Mississippi, ML. 🙂
Some recent comments on various message boards frequented by shooters indicate that a few people are either changing their minds or are bowing to the politically correct pressure of the day. They have begun to assert that they do not “love their guns” and only view them as necessary tools. While I couldn’t agree more that guns are simply tools, pretty much like any others, I don’t know why that would make them unlovable . . .
Most men love their tools — all different kinds — and men have always loved their guns. I’m certainly not ashamed to join them. But, you might ask, just what is it that we (who still profess it anyway) actually love about guns? Aren’t they killing machines, good only for harming others? We hear that a lot.
So, why do I love my guns? Let me count the ways.
This would actually make a pretty good discussion topic – and there is some discussion in the comments at the link. “Guns are just tools” – in a sense, yes, but in a sense they’re more than that. I love my chainsaw and my cookware and my chest full of mismatched wrenches, but not in any way that’s directly tied to my belief structure. Guns are different, and for pretty specific reasons. I suspect those reasons might vary from person to person, but this old saw sums mine up rather nicely:
God created men, but Samuel Colt made them equal.
I’m a scrawny old man, grown that way after a long career as a scrawny kid and a scrawny young and middle-aged man. I can’t throw a baseball, much less excel at mixed martial arts. I never was much physically, and with each passing year I become rather less.
But I fear no man or beast on earth. I can be killed, but you’d have a hard time intimidating me into a cattle car and when I go down I’ll take an honor guard to hell with me. It’s not my wall full of excellent stewpots that gives me the ability to say that with a straight face.

Yes, the definition of “love” was covered in the comments there at TTAG. Very respectful, and I gave away several dozen more free e-books. 🙂
