That’s only happened to me once before…

Yesterday I was going to be on my feet all day. Regular readers know I don’t have the usual full complement of feet, and they really are there to keep your legs from fraying at the end.

Regular readers also know I sometimes make fun of myself over my full and growing-fuller batbelt. But yesterday I stripped of all excess weight and encumbrances…

…and of course it caused nothing but trouble off and on all day.

The work crew disbanded at 1:30 but it turned out I wasn’t done till damn near five, because a lot of running around was still required and I was so punchy I didn’t do it in anything remotely resembling an efficient and productive manner. At one point I had to go get all the roofing to bring it to the Lair…

Nice, huh?

Nice, huh?

…and the roofing was packaged most carefully. There was plastic. There was wood. There was nylon strapping. I couldn’t possibly pick it all up at once, so all that shit had to be cut through. Normally no problem.

Did I have one knife on me? Even one? I did not. Ended up gnawing through it with a hacksaw. So at that time I made a decision.

That’s a really nice Morakniv somebody sent me. It’s a really good practical knife but it’s…so…orange. No offense, but no way I’m carrying that.

I had the thought originally that it would make a damn good addition to the Jeep kit, but then wondered why I needed yet another knife. So it found its way into the box’o’knives.

And yesterday I repented of that, while sawing on straps and plastic with a hacksaw blade.

Just saying. That’s my new Jeep knife.

Oh good I’m not the only one who has done this. :^)

You could always use some black electrical tape or some heat shrink (assuming you could find any in the right diameter) to cover the orange handle and make a sheath out of scrap leather, you know. But speaking as a guy who misplaces things on a regular basis, it’s hard to misplace an orange knife.

Krylon spray paint for plastic is 100% goof proof, goes on evenly, lasts a really long time, comes in about 50 colors, dries quickly especially on warm days. I wouldn’t spray it on if it’s really humid. You mask off what you don’t want painted. But bright orange is easy to find if you have a mishap where things get scattered about. Just saying…

Joel, instead of hanging all that stuff from your belt, have you ever considered wearing a workman’s multi-pocket vest like the ones sold by Duluth Trading that are made for carrying lots of Stuff? Pockets are inside and outside, different sizes, built in ventilation panels for hot weather. The weight of what you carry is much more evenly distributed. They are mega durable in brush and thorns, washable, dry quickly (the summer ones), reasonable price for what you get.

If I were going to refurb the handle on a Mora, I’d dunk it in a can of Plasti-Dip. It helps that there’s probably a can of it around here someplace.
