They say that Louis XIV had the inscription Ultima Ratio Regum cast into all the cannon of the French Army. It means “The Ultimate Argument of Kings,” and that always struck me as one of the most honest and up-front things any ruler or would-be ruler ever said. “We can dress it up prettier than this, but when it comes down to the unvarnished truth this is what it’s about: You’ll do as I say or I’ll send my goons to kill you.”
I thought about that for a long time. If there’s an ultimate argument, it seems only logical that there must be an ultimate answer. For years I thought the ultimate answer must be the bullets in my rifle, but it never seemed quite right. I’ve got bullets – he’s got frigging Cannon Balls. I mean, if there were three hundred million rifles throwing bullets at him, then maybe. But we all know that’s not going to happen. So if there’s an ultimate answer to his ultimate argument, it sure as hell ain’t bullets.
It finally came to me – and that’s when I abandoned the city and most of my stuff, and gave all that was behind me a good stiff Randian Shrug.
The ultimate answer to kings is not a bullet, but a belly laugh.

I hadn’t visited Tam’s blog for a long time, not that I think there’s anything wrong with her or her writing, but the comments were getting icky.

Crap, I can’t even take a weekend off and another daily read bites the dust.
Bah! Hopefully she’ll reconsider after a bit. At least flip it back on with comments disabled.
I’m going to miss her blog too, she is funny as hell, uses sarcasm like a razor and takes great photographs, much like Brigid (Home On The Range). I wish her well.

Damn, blast, and thunder!
Tam’s was one of the first blogs I ever read, when I discovered blogs. It’s been a daily visit ever since. After my motorcycle wreck (well, the later one), I asked some advice, as she’d done the whole pinned-together thing herself, and she was quite gracious, not that I’d expected anything else: she is indeed the preeminent Mistress of Snark, AFAIK, but only when it suits the conversation.
As usual, it only takes one idiot, etc…
We can only hope she reconsiders.
By all the small gods, by His Noodly Appendage Itself, for that matter, I’d like to get my gnarly hands on the idiot who has been pestering her. Tam is more than capable of taking care of herself, but I’ve less to lose, and it’s just a fact that most of us old hillbilly biker veterans have, let’s say, a more direct way of getting our points across.
Again, just…damn.
