On my Tracfone, about half an hour after a call from a number I don’t recognize or have on my list. (After all these years, I still love Caller ID. If I don’t know you, I ain’t talking to you.)
And the text said,…

That never happened to me before. Is this a thing now? Spamming text messages?

Yes, it’s a thing now. I activated a new Tracfone a couple months ago and got a bunch of spam, both texts and calls, though it seems to have faded away now.
Yes, I have a new Tracfone too, and now have a list of ten “missed calls” with out of state area codes. I made the mistake of answering the phone the first time and it ate up my minutes, even though nobody was there… And most certainly spam of some kind, since nobody but my sister has that number and she knows better than to call me. Wasn’t her area code anyway. The caller ID doesn’t do me much good unless it shows the name. I can’t remember numbers very well.
I got the phone, and carry it, so I can call out if I have an emergency. Won’t be answering it again if it rings.
I just have an ancient Nokia phone and I never get anything like that. My phone isn’t a “smart phone” though.
FYI Joel one of the new things with PayPal is that, as per the user agreement, they can use your information (phone, email etc) for marketing. They sell this info to 3rd parties and you get spammed. That is one of the reasons I don’t do PayPal any more

My phones(cell and landline) have been exploding with spamminess the last several months. I am now routinely awakened by one and often both screeching at me bearing 866 and 800 numbers.
I get lots of random “come help us ID rip you” texts.
Not exclusively, I get local numbers as well as those of other states as well. I spent a day watching my caller ID call out area code from Amarillo, to Dallas, Arlington, and points East in Texas a while back. I keep getting one from the Federation of Law Enforcement Officers……at around 11 PM. Somehow I doubt even the cops are so daft as to be calling me that late for donations.
I can’t tell you how many times my phone rang and no message was left.
If I was a wizard, all rorbo-callers would be ass raped by diseased yaks.
