Scary Manifesto that keeps getting pushed down on the sidebar by filthy capitalism!
They say that Louis XIV had the inscription Ultima Ratio Regum cast into all the cannon of the French Army. It means “The Ultimate Argument of Kings,” and that always struck me as one of the most honest and up-front things any ruler or would-be ruler ever said. “We can dress it up prettier than this, but when it comes down to the unvarnished truth this is what it’s about: You’ll do as I say or I’ll send my goons to kill you.”
I thought about that for a long time. If there’s an ultimate argument, it seems only logical that there must be an ultimate answer. For years I thought the ultimate answer must be the bullets in my rifle, but it never seemed quite right. I’ve got bullets – he’s got frigging Cannon Balls. I mean, if there were three hundred million rifles throwing bullets at him, then maybe. But we all know that’s not going to happen. So if there’s an ultimate answer to his ultimate argument, it sure as hell ain’t bullets.
It finally came to me – and that’s when I abandoned the city and most of my stuff, and gave all that was behind me a good stiff Randian Shrug.
The ultimate answer to kings is not a bullet, but a belly laugh.

Was it sufficiently square?
Of course it’s square. It’s made of square things.
It’s also quite nicely level, which I was much more worried about.
Naw I will come visit you at some point. Bearing gifts of course..
Woohoo! Your stucco job actually looks like a stucco job!
Hey, nice porch. Now you can set up a charcoal grill and a picnic table with an umbrella and some lounge chairs and party down . . .
🙂
Very nice, Joel.
I’ve been wondering how you’re going to keep LB off the bed, not that he doesn’t have to climb to access it…
NOW that he doesn’t have to climb…
Oh, that’s one mistake I carefully avoided with LB when he was a puppy. No bed at bedtime, no laps ever.
And you are going to wrap the support columns with barbed wire to keep the rats, mice, snakes, and other desert dwellers out of your house and bedroom? Staple insulation and 6 mil plastic to the underside of your floor?
Looks really good, congratulations on the level and square. Learned a lot from reading your progress posts, thanks.
It’s lovely that you have sleeping space for visitors – Joels B& B.
Um…no. Not only no. Hell no.
What ZtZ says – I would find some light steel or aluminum sheeting and nail it to the undersides of the joists after filling the space with insulation. That or cement board, anything critters and crawlies cannot get through.
Very nice…

Now Joel, where’s your manners?! You will have the attic for guest accommodations. Plenty warm up there as you can attest to. ;>)
What terrapod said. Metal would seal off your insulated floor and plastic vapor barrier, and metal can’t be chewed through by rodents. If you could electrify the metal you might get a few dead rodents – Yeeessssss!!!!!! – on the ground that you could rake out as necessary. It might be difficult to sleep with the occasional zzzzttttt! coming from under your floor as a rodent gets zapped, but it’s likely the insulation would muffle the sound.
Now that we’ve all seen the wonderful sleeping space you built can you expect us to not visit…get the PortAPotty, the coffee pot, the bread pans ready for the deluge of visitors and tourists,,,see you soon…oh FOMCL and ROTF
