Slo-mo: The best thing that ever happened to gun videos

Busy day today, just how busy I’m not yet sure but I’m currently obsessing over a pile of old splintered wood. Plus there’s a trip to town I probably ought to make even though I don’t want to, and I’m awaiting a series of emails concerning a possible new paying gig I could really use right now.

So I won’t be hanging out at the blog this morning. But while I’m gone, please meditate on the following koan: If somebody shoots at you with a .44 Magnum, ballistic gel is neither cover nor concealment.

  1. Ben says:

There was clearly some sort of ignition inside the gell caused by the energy imparted by the bullet. You can see the flash, smoky gases escape, and then a black area where the ignition occurred. Does the same thing happen inside (say) a human body when hit by such a high energy round?

  2. Joel says:

I don’t know what that was all about, Ben. Seen a lot of ballistic gel videos, and never saw one do that before.

  3. M Ryan says:

    Cool video…

Just throwing it out there, looks like that ignition inside the gel may have been caused by the gel compressing the air as it retracted to it’s normal form.

What does a .44 magnum round cost? Even with reloading it’s got to be quite expensive. Hell of a gun though.

  5. Joel says:

Yeah, okay, just guessing but looking at it again it looked like it dieseled. Sucked in a lot of air, vaporized some of the gelatin in passing, then quickly compressed which produced a lot of localized heat and went bang.

  6. Diogenes says:

Is it my imagination or was there a powder burn taking place about 4″s or so inside the gel? I watched it twice and saw the same thing, but that would mean there was a pretty substantial amount of powder in transit with the bullet..
    WOW !
That, along with all the other parts of getting hit by that thing would put a serious amount of “crappy day” into someone’s personal journal.

  7. Diogenes says:

Ah, just read the other comments (which didn’t show at first, go figure)
    Still, “crappy day” , definitely.

    @sneldip1
market price for most rounds is in the $0.75 a round factory for the inexpensive but very effective winchester white box 240gr JSP. Very usable round for deer or black bear hunting.

Great brass for reloading as well.

Personally I reload a 240gr cast lead swc (that I buy, I don’t cast my own lead) that runs about 1150fps out of a 4″ tracker (same gun as joels) that I reload for about $0.17 a round.

Not bad considering some .22LR ammo these days can be as much as $0.10 a shot

  9. Ray Johanson says:

Pretty much any of the slow motion gel shots have a flash in them.

  10. Joe says:

Great video! Who did the music?

  11. Kentucky says:

I’ve seen a lotta slo-mos of gel shots and have NEVER seen that flash before.

    Very strange.

  12. Kentucky says:

    Lookie what I found . . .

    Who knew?
