Scary Manifesto that keeps getting pushed down on the sidebar by filthy capitalism!
They say that Louis XIV had the inscription Ultima Ratio Regum cast into all the cannon of the French Army. It means “The Ultimate Argument of Kings,” and that always struck me as one of the most honest and up-front things any ruler or would-be ruler ever said. “We can dress it up prettier than this, but when it comes down to the unvarnished truth this is what it’s about: You’ll do as I say or I’ll send my goons to kill you.”
I thought about that for a long time. If there’s an ultimate argument, it seems only logical that there must be an ultimate answer. For years I thought the ultimate answer must be the bullets in my rifle, but it never seemed quite right. I’ve got bullets – he’s got frigging Cannon Balls. I mean, if there were three hundred million rifles throwing bullets at him, then maybe. But we all know that’s not going to happen. So if there’s an ultimate answer to his ultimate argument, it sure as hell ain’t bullets.
It finally came to me – and that’s when I abandoned the city and most of my stuff, and gave all that was behind me a good stiff Randian Shrug.
The ultimate answer to kings is not a bullet, but a belly laugh.

Look who’s loaded with pears!
Three years ago the pear tree bore fruit, long after I’d given up any hope of it. I lost most of the yield to rot and bugs, but learned a lesson – I hope. Still got a little bit of … Continue reading
Good news, bad news…
Good news! The drunken loser and one of his friends managed to fix whatever went wrong with the POS pickup’s steering and drag it out of the hole he’d dug for it, and it’s gone from my life before the … Continue reading
I haven’t been using the ebike a lot…
I could blame it on the weather but really I just haven’t been feeling it, and there’s been no pressing need. But this morning promised to be typical Monsoon, still and warm in the morning and then hot and threatening … Continue reading
Did Uncle Joel just have an effect on the local retail ammo supply?
So this morning I went into the local drug store briefly, intending only to confirm that there’s really no reason to look for 9mm ammo there. Instead, here’s what I saw… Half a shelf of 9mm, with quite an assortment … Continue reading
The most July morning ever…
Seven ayem and I’m already sweating. Tobie found a friend, sticking out into the driveway to warm up and start her day. Actually Tobie was at the far end of a 15′ walking lead when I took this picture, because … Continue reading
Just another day…
I overslept a lot, Tobie finally checking my pulse at quarter to six. Dammit, the cool morning is the best part of the day for getting things done, June through August, and I hate it when I’m an hour behind … Continue reading
It turned out to be so much worse…
No sooner had I finished the post below than Tobie and I heard another engine in the wash. I thought at first maybe Neighbor S had come back, but no… …a big old white pickup was coming from the opposite … Continue reading
Some things are best done early in the morning.
Neighbor S came by to help me swap out the solar panels on my ground mount. We had agreed on 7 ayem but ended up starting rather earlier. It’s not going to get anything but hot today and wrestling heavy … Continue reading
Yeah, it’s the ammo.
I polished off that box of fifty Wolf rounds and then (sob) mag-dumped almost a whole box of the good stuff as fast as I could – and the Arex worked just fine. So there’s just something about most 115-grain … Continue reading
Comment trouble?
I got an email yesterday from Regular Reader Kentucky saying he tried to leave a comment and only got an error message. Can’t help noticing that the newest comment on the blog is two days old and I was expecting … Continue reading
When speccing solar panels, overkill is good.
I just now thought of something that should have gone into the post below. There’s been a sea change in the way people spec solar panels since I first got involved with the issue. They used to be basically the … Continue reading
New Solar Panels for the Ground Mount
I’m extremely lucky to have a neighbor who both a) installs solar power systems for fun and profit, and b) is actually good at it. Also, the social security thing could have happened at a worse time because I’ve spent … Continue reading
Tobie has an admirer, I think…
Nothing unusual about Tobie going nuts at something outside his window in the middle of the night… …but it’s been a long time since his nocturnal visitor left a calling card. I was even able to easily track the coyote … Continue reading
I hate this ladder…
When you live on scrounge, and also do labor gigs for neighbors, and also live deep in the desert where neighbors can be kind of transitory because they move here thinking it’s a good idea and then move away when … Continue reading
My new pistol has low tastes…
This is my Arex Delta Gen 2, which I acquired late April – and which I want to like a lot more than I do… In specs it’s exactly what I wanted: a very modern plastic striker gun with a … Continue reading
A typical summer day in the desert…
Still, calm, bright, hot… After all the moisture of the past several days, the forecast called for Monsoon to take a break for a while. Today, at least, the forecast has proven dead right. It’s just after noon and we’re … Continue reading
A hermit’s nightmare…
Just got back from Senior Day at the Palace of Food, AKA the Safeway in the biggish town about 35 miles away. And while it’s usually pretty busy, today it was packed with people either sauntering the wrong way or … Continue reading
Wash ran for the third day in a row…
This is the strongest, though hardly a flood. Around 4 this afternoon, after the rain. And then here’s the wash a few minutes ago, when I went back for an evening cool-off shower. You can’t ever tell till it’s over … Continue reading
